Reading time: 2 mins

She televised intervention was announced for 8 p.m. on Tuesday evening. But, three hours later, Vladimir Putin was still not on screen. And all the official commentators assure it: the head of the Kremlin will not finally speak until Wednesday morning. “You can go to bed,” tweeted Margarita Simonyan, the usually knowledgeable editor-in-chief of Russia Today. Without specifying however at what time, after having watched for a long time, it will be necessary to wake up the next day.

Recorded, the presidential address could be broadcast early in the morning at Vladivostok and the rest of the Russian Far East, which are seven hours ahead of Moscow.

A carefully orchestrated rumor

From the afternoon, Tuesday, the rumor carefully orchestrated by the Kremlin press pool, however announced a statement by Vladimir Putin in the evening. And this only a few hours after the shock announcement of the day: the authorities installed by Moscow in four regions of eastern Ukraine declared that they would hold urgently from September 23 to 27 “referendums” of annexation by Russia. A real provocation for kyiv and its Western allies, in the midst of a Ukrainian military counter-offensive.

The head of the Kremlin was supposed to intervene to support this initiative but also, possibly, to declare the general or partial mobilization of the population for a large-scale military “operation”. Instead of the presidential speech, television showed his various official appearances of the day on a loop: reception of the new ambassadors but also… a meeting with officials from the military industry.
