On October 13, the intellectual property research institution IPRdaily and the incoPat Innovation Index Research Center jointly released the “2021 Global Highly Relevant Blockchain Authorized Invention Patent Ranking (TOP100)”. The report shows that global blockchain authorized invention patents have continued to grow significantly since 2019. Globally, the three companies with the largest number of authorized patents are Ant Group (1252), Tencent Technology (391) and IBM (297) ).

It is understood that compared with previous similar studies, this report limits keywords to the “first claim” field in the patent specification, and further screens the effective invention patents related to the blockchain and its applications, and compares the essence with The patents that are not highly relevant to the blockchain are eliminated, and the effective invention patents that are highly relevant to the blockchain are retained.

“The role of intellectual property as a strategic resource for national development and a core element of international competitiveness is becoming more and more prominent, and the evaluation of patents is also speeding up from the pursuit of quantity to the focus on quality. By focusing on core fields, we will select highly relevant blockchain authorizations. Invention patents help to understand the true distribution of the current global blockchain patents.” said Li Junhui, a special researcher at the Intellectual Property Research Center of China University of Political Science and Law.

Blockchain is widely regarded as the next generation of disruptive frontier technology after the Internet. Large-scale technology companies and blockchain start-ups around the world are all making efforts to deploy blockchain-related patents. The data shows that as of August 31, 2021, there are 8,957 valid invention patents for the global blockchain, which are mainly distributed in 9 countries or regions including China, the United States, South Korea, and Japan. From the perspective of licensing trends, the number of patents granted for this technology has continued to increase significantly since 2019.

Thanks to policy support and corporate investment, the domestic blockchain industry has developed rapidly, and it is also far ahead in terms of blockchain patents. The report shows that a total of 7 of the TOP10 companies are from China, 2 from the United States, and 1 from South Korea. Among them, Ant Group ranked first in the world with 1252 blockchain authorized patents, surpassing the sum of the second to fifth places. Tencent Technology has the fastest growth rate in the past year, ranking second with 391 authorized patents. IBM is closely followed by ranking third in the world, with 297 authorized patents.

The report pointed out that Ant Group’s blockchain patents are mainly laid out in the underlying technical fields such as data storage, privacy protection, security mechanisms, and transaction processing. Its business covers scenarios include food traceability, cross-border trade, copyright protection and development, and shipping. Logistics, carbon neutral management, etc.

It is reported that the Ant Chain team is responsible for the blockchain business of the Ant Group. In addition to the number of patents granted, public information shows that the number of blockchain patent applications of Ant Chain has ranked first in the world for four consecutive years. According to previous statistics from the international authoritative intellectual property magazine IAM, as of the end of 2020, AntChain has 2,298 patent families in the blockchain field, and its patent strength ranks first in the world.
