In Ecuador, a prosecutor in charge of feminicides murdered

An Ecuadorian prosecutor, in charge in particular of feminicides, was assassinated on Monday, September 19 in Guayaquil, in the south-west of Ecuador, we learned from official sources. “Prosecutor Edgar Escobar (…) was shot and killed this morning” near his office in the major port on the Pacific coast and economic capital of the country, the prosecution announced on Twitter.

Two suspects were arrested shortly after, the same source said. The victim was a member of the“Unity of persons and guarantees” of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, in charge of investigating feminicides and other hate crimes. The motive for his murder is currently unknown.

Third shooting assassination in five months

But it comes as the city of Guayaquil, plagued by drug trafficking, is experiencing an unprecedented wave of violence, in the neighborhoods as well as in its vast prison complex, the scene of several bloody massacres between rival gangs which have killed nearly 400 people since February. 2021.
