On Saturday, Borussia Dortmund was able to win the prestigious derby (1-0) against rivals Schalke 04. After BVB captain Marco Reus had to be substituted during the game due to injury, the injury of another top performer now reduces the euphoria about victory.

Dortmund are currently in second place in the Bundesliga and were able to benefit at the weekend from the ongoing weakness in form of their worst title competitor FC Bayern Munich. After three points from the last four games, Bayern are only fifth in the table.

Already dropped from Nations League squad

The injured is Salih Özcan, who has attracted attention with consistently good performances in the last few games. The new signing from 1. FC Köln was also on the pitch over the entire length on Saturday.

Now the Turkish Football Association has confirmed that Özcan has contracted bone edema in his foot and has therefore had to be dropped from the squad for the forthcoming Nations League games. The defensive midfielder complained of foot pain after the final whistle – now those fears have been confirmed.

Salih Özcan joins BVB’s already existing injury concerns. In addition to Özcan, Dortmund are currently missing goalkeepers Gregor Kobel, Raphaël Guerreiro, Mateu Morey, Mo Dahoud, Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, Marco Reus and Sébastien Haller.

Exact downtime still unknown

The injury comes at the worst possible time for Özcan. After Dahoud was out in central midfield, the Turkish international was rotated into BVB’s starting XI and was able to impress with strong performances. At times he was able to oust his direct competitor for the position, Emre Can.

It is not yet known how long Özcan will be missing from Dortmund. The origin of the injury has not yet been communicated.

The Turkish national team meets Luxembourg on Thursday and the Faroe Islands on Sunday. After the international break, Borussia Dortmund will face 1. FC Köln of all places – and thus Özcan’s old employer. It remains to be seen whether he will be fit again by then.
