iPhones don’t work with 5G "pure" from Brazil

O “Pure” 5Galso known as 5G SA (Standalone) is arriving in São Paulo this Thursday (4), but is already present in other Brazilian capitals, such as João Pessoa, Porto Alegre, Belo Horizonte and Brasília. To take advantage of the technology, all you need is a compatible cell phone — see the list of 5G cell phones in Brazil. But if you have an iPhone, unfortunately it is still not possible to take advantage of the full potential of 5G.

This is because Apple is still doing the validation and testing to get better performance. So, even if you have any of the recent releases of iPhones like the iPhone 12, iPhone 13 or the SE (2022), you still won’t be able to use 5G SA. In these cases, it will be possible to use only 5G NSA (non-standalone).

In a simple way, the difference between the two technologies is only the signal quality and coverage, as the SA needs many antennas to maintain a stable connection. In practice, being close to a 5G station, any compatible iPhone will be able to have practically the same speed, even using the 5G NSA. They just won’t have the same latency as other competitors, such as devices from Samsung, ASUS, Motorola, Xiaomi and Realme.

When will it resolve?

Apple is expected to release an update for iOS that will allow it to use “pure” 5G to its full potential, but there is still no forecast for that. Thinking about speeding up this process, Fábio Faria, Brazil’s communications minister, said he’s going to Apple’s headquarters in California next week.

iPhone devices need to download an update from Apple itself. me and the president [da Anatel, Carlos] Baigorri we’re going, on Tuesday, at Apple itself, there in Palo Alto [na Califórnia, EUA]ask them to speed up this update and we can already have 5G standalone (SA) working”
