20 experts regularly test the best new cars of the year – and then choose the “German Car of the year”. The winner has now been determined. He’s not from Germany.
This is what winners look like: The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is the best car of the year. In the “German Car of the Year” competition, it was able to convince the specialist jury more than any of the competing models. Since May, the electric car has been available for prices starting at 41,900 euros (minus the state subsidy) and competes against rivals such as the VW ID4 or the Skoda Enyaq. A whole family of models is to be created under the Ioniq sub-brand.
The exterior is clearly drawn and the interior is unusually homely, the 4.64 meter long Ioniq 5 lin is available in four versions: two with two motors and all-wheel drive and two with only one motor installed on the rear axle. The Koreans thus cover a power range from 170 hp to 306 hp.

After 5 minutes of charging, it continues 100 kilometers
While VW, for example, regulates most of its electric vehicles at 180 km / h at the latest, Hyundai always allows the Ioniq 5 to run up to 185 km / h. In the best case scenario, it can sprint from 0 to 100 km / h in 5.2 seconds. The energy for this is provided by lithium-ion batteries in two sizes with 58 or 72.6 kWh. This enables standard ranges of up to 485 kilometers.
Because the Ioniq 5 is the first e-car to work with 800-volt technology alongside the Porsche Taycan and Audi E-Tron GT, it also sets new records on the charging station: In the best case, it takes 18 minutes from ten to 80 percent charge level. The electricity for 100 new kilometers flows in just five minutes. In order to bridge the time as comfortably as possible, there are particularly comfortable reclining seats with extendable footrests, as in an airplane.

The car as a charging station
In addition to the drive, Hyundai also has a few special features to offer in terms of equipment. There is a head-up display with augmented reality technology, and a solar roof provides electricity for up to 2,000 additional kilometers per year. And via an external socket, the car can also supply other consumers with electricity from its battery, from gardening tools to the neighbour’s electric car.
Just like with the main competitor VW, it should not stay with one model. Hyundai has already announced at least two more Ioniq models by 2024.
