José Manuel del Río Virgen was released, this after a Veracruz judge decided not to link him to the process. The politician was in preventive detention for the alleged intellectual authorship of him in the homicide of Remigio René Tovar Tovarwho was a candidate for the municipal presidency of Cazones de Herrera.

It should be remembered that since his arrest there has been talk of political persecution against him. Since, according to his statements after being released: “there was not a single piece of evidence, I would never have dared to commit something so atrocious, it is vile that they use scapegoats to put them in jail.”

Tovar was murdered on June 4, 2021 in the Barrio de la Antena, where he lived. The murder occurred just two days before the elections, in which he was a representative of the Movimiento Ciudadano (MC) political party.

In December of that same year, del Río Virgen was arrested for his alleged involvement in the incident. In that sense, upon his release from prison he also expressed that he has not forgotten the crime:

“I feel very good, the truth is that justice takes time but it arrives. Justice will be served for the assassination of our candidate Remigio Tovar Tovar and the Veracruz authorities are responsible.”

The politician, considered by many to be a political prisoner, had a warm welcome when he left after spending more than 176 days in jail. The people received him with cheers and shouts of encouragement, with phrases like “Force del Río!”

Despite the fact that José Manuel del Río was part of MC, politicians from the National Regeneration Movement (Morena) expressed indignation at his imprisonment and celebrated his release. One of the members of the Fourth Transformation who always showed his support for him is Ricardo Monreal, who through Twitter celebrated his release with the message:

Free, José Manuel del Río Virgen, technical secretary of the Jucopo of the Senate, to whom he will once again fulfill his duties. Poor Veracruz, so far from justice and so close to authoritarianism. Let’s keep fighting for the hundreds of innocent people in prison; Today we celebrate just one step.

After his release, the former secretary made reference to the fight mentioned by Monreal, for the freedom of prisoners who were unjustly imprisoned. Since, according to his words, that of the 1,300 inmates of the Pancho Viejo Prison, fifty percent were imprisoned for an unjust cause.

It is worth mentioning that the news that del Río would be released from prison was announced on June 16. Given the situation, the governor of Veracruz territory, Cuitláhuac García expressed his indignation and insinuated that he had managed to get out free thanks to the influence of someone powerful.
