King Harald has fallen ill, the Norwegian court announces in a communique.

A worrying message – 85-year-old Harald has had problems with his health in recent years and has been hospitalized several times.

King Harald is now on sick leave with what are assumed to be respiratory symptoms – at the same time as Norway’s Deputy Regent Crown Prince Haakon, 49, has been in Kenya – 1,000 miles from home – together with Crown Princess Victoria.

King Harald sick – while Haakon is in Kenya with Victoria

As late as yesterday evening, Haakon was still in Nairobi, where he, together with Crown Princess Victoria, was a guest at the long-planned cocktail party at the Swedish embassy.

And if there was a concern for King Harald even then, both he and Crown Princess Victoria hid it well.

But after today’s announcement, which went out shortly after 10:00 in the morning, Haakon is now on his way home to shoulder the responsibility as Norway’s head of state – if he hasn’t already landed in Oslo:

– His Royal Highness the Crown Prince Regent is carrying out the King’s planned program today, states the court.
