Kia unveils the Niro 2 (2022), available in hybrid, PHEV and electric powertrains

The announcement was expected. Kia has just unveiled by press release a revision of one of its bestsellers in Europe, the Kia Niro. The new version of the SUV changes its design a bit. The grille of the 2022 Niro 2 adopts a look that is both sexier and fierce. At the rear, the lights are on either side of the rear windshield.

Those who follow the constructor’s concept cars will no doubt recognize a link with the 2019 Hibaniro concept car. Inside the cabin, the manufacturer has refined the experience, while giving pride of place to screens. The materials are essentially recycled, in order to further reduce the vehicle’s carbon footprint.

The engines, in fact, are available as on the previous iteration, in three variants: hybrid, PHEV and e-Niro 100% electric. Kia has yet to say more about the technology and characteristics delivered by these engines. For now, we can just recall the technical sheet of the current Kia Niro.

The basic e-Niro version has a 136 horsepower electric motor coupled to a 39.2 kWh battery – which gives it a range of 289 km. A 204 horsepower variant exists with a 64 kWh battery and a more comfortable range of 455 km. The hybrid and PHEV variants offer a 105 horsepower 1.6 L GDI gasoline engine with a 44 horsepower electric motor.

The current Niro’s PHEV model can get 49 km of range from its small battery pack. It is difficult to say at this point that the Kia e-Niro 2 will have increased range compared to the current model which already has very comfortable range. When we look at other more efficient Kia vehicles like the EV6 we note that the best range offered by the manufacturer is, at 528 km, not very far from that of the current e-Niro.

On the other hand, we can no doubt expect significant progress in fast charging. The current e-Niro is limited to a 77 kW recharge. For comparison, the Tesla Model Y has fast charging that can deliver up to 250 kW. Finally, note that Kia is launching a new feature, called Greenzone Drive Mode, on the PHEV variant.

In concrete terms, the vehicle will automatically switch to the battery pack in certain areas defined by the local authorities. Of course, for the system to work, there needs to be some battery life left on the small battery of these models. The Kia Niro 2 should land in Europe in the course of 2022.
