It was only at the beginning of the month that King Jigme Khesar and Queen Jetsun Pema surprised the world with a photo. On the wedding day, too, the couple is as in love as they were on the first day.

Thimphu – On the occasion of their tenth wedding anniversary, King Jigme Khesar (41) and Queen Jetsun Pema (31) of Bhutan published two pictures from the Lingkana Palace, the residence of the royal family in Bhutan’s capital Thimphu. The photos do not show an arranged couple that is particularly artistically staged for a worthy occasion, but rather they show the heartwarming simplicity Solidarity and closeness between two people who have found each other.*

The couple married on October 13, 2011 in Punakha Dzong at a traditional Buddhist ceremony. The Buddhist monastery castle in the Punakha district, also known as Pungtang-Dechen-Photrang-Dzong, which translates as “Extremely awesome Dzong Palace of Bliss”, serves as the administrative center of this area. Shortly before their wedding, they had received the blessing of the holy relic from Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal.

In Bhutan the party went on for days. The Bhutanese government declared October 13-15 a national holiday. On October 14, ten years ago, the king had Jigme and his Queen Jetsun* welcomes the people of Thimphu. The following day, they mingled with the crowd at a public ceremony at Changlimithang Stadium.
