The 2022 World Cup in Qatar is imminent and the respective teams are currently starting to prepare for the international sporting event in all kinds of ways. However, a bigger problem was brewing in the French national team, with top player Kylian Mbappé refusing to play in a point.
The exceptional striker could be missing from the photos of the French national team. As the PSG player said in a statement to the AFP news agency, he decided not to take part in his team’s photo shoot.
The reason given was the lack of a say in the image rights. Mbappé also criticized the French Football Federation (FFF), which is said to have not agreed to a change in the agreement on image rights, as “L’Equipe” reported.
Kylian Mbappé doesn’t want to advertise sports betting and fast food
The focus is on marketing his own person from a total of 14 sponsors, over which he would like to have control. Among them are providers for sports betting and fast food chains, for which Mbappé does not want to advertise. The professional player also wants to have a say in which advertising space the pictures of him hang on. Noisy “ESPN“said the Frenchman in his statement:
“I decided not to take part in the photoshoot after the French FA refused to change the image rights agreement with the players.”
In addition, the center forward complained that the pictures of some players were used much more often than others.
Conflict known for months
There had already been disputes about the image rights and sponsors of the national team in March. Already at this point asked Kylian Mbappé asked the President of the Noël Le Graët association to examine the rules on image rights. Then there was a conversation between Le Graët, Mbappé’s mother and a lawyer, after which the international believed that changes would be made.
As it turned out, that wasn’t the case. According to the French journalist Robin Bairner, it is not about money either, since Mbappé is donating it anyway.
French Football Association reacts – and meets with criticism
During training on Monday, there is said to have been a conversation with Mbappé and the players Hugo Lloris and Raphaël Varane, who are said to have expressed their solidarity with the PSG striker.

The French Football Association then announced on Monday evening Twitter, “to revise the agreement on rights as soon as possible”. In this context, the FFF informed that the concerns prevailed throughout the team and were also legitimate:
“The FFF is pleased to work on the broad outlines of a new agreement that will allow them to safeguard their interests while addressing the concerns and legitimate beliefs unanimously expressed by their players.”
French fans had a mixed reaction to this announcement. Some noted that Kylian Mbappé now also controls the FFF. Others criticized that it was not about the latest research by French investigative journalist Romain Molina.
His most recent article dealt with the sexual abuse of minors, which the FFF has been preventing from clarifying for decades. A user wrote: “We were all waiting for Le’s resignation Graët. But image rights are apparently more important than sexual harassment of minors.”.
