Börje Salming has gone out of time. Before his passing, he conveyed a fine message.
A legend has left us. On November 24, Börje Salming passed away at the age of 71.
This after three months earlier being diagnosed with the incurable disease ALS:
– I have received a message that has shaken the life of me and my family, Börje told TT on 10 August.
Börje got worse with each passing week. Nevertheless, a post was published on his Instagram shortly before his death.
Börje Salming’s greetings – through wife Pia
Two weeks ago, Börje was honored by his old hockey team Toronto Maple Leaf in Scotiabank Arena.
Then the 71-year-old could no longer speak for months, and he had to be escorted out by his friend Mats Sundin.
When Börje received a standing ovation, it broke – he started to cry:
A week later, the hockey legend was greeted by the crowd’s cheers again, this time in the Avicii Arena.
Here, during the “Hockey Gala of the Ages”, Börje received the NHL’s honorary award with his family by his side.
As he was unable to speak himself, Mrs. Pia Salming gave a speech of thanks:
– We want to thank you for the award from the NHL, it is a great honor to receive this award. Börje hopes that his passion for the sport will inspire the hockey world and above all hockey youth.
– His motto has always been to have fun and never give up. We in the whole family – Börje, me and all the children – want to thank you for the warmth that the entire Swedish people and Canada have given us during this difficult time.
This was Börje’s last greeting to his fans through his wife Pia. Two weeks earlier, another strong message was published on the legend’s Instagram.
