According to the Brazilian Society of Endocrinology (SBEM), diabetes is a chronic disease that can manifest itself in two different ways: deficiencies in the production of insulin and interference in the action of the substance produced by the body.
According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), since 2019 there has been a 16% increase in diabetes cases worldwide. This means that in less than three years, more than 70 million people have developed the disease. In Brazil, the entity believes that there may be up to 16 million sick individuals. The Brazilian Society of Diabetes (SBD) estimates that at least 12.5 million Brazilians have diabetes.
“There is immune substrate diabetes, called type 1 diabetes, which we find more often in children and adolescents and sometimes in young adults. It is a disease in the immune system, where there is, from the beginning, a deficit of insulin production. And you have type 2 diabetes, the most common. It is not a disease that starts with a deficiency in insulin production, but a failure of insulin action”, says cardiologist Abrão Cury, from Hcor, Hospital do Coração.
Anyone with diabetes knows that there are many foods that should be avoided, especially those rich in bad fats, salt and, of course, sugar. On the other hand, there is also a list of foods that should be included in the menu to help keep blood sugar levels in check. The Picture Pantry/Getty Images

What some may not know is that type 2 diabetes, in most cases, can be avoided with healthy habits. Excessive consumption of foods with a high glycemic index and a sedentary lifestyle are the main causes of the disease.
“Information and knowledge should be considered the two most important pillars for reducing the incidence and/or adherence to treatment by patients. In this way, we will be able to improve prevention programs, as well as adequately treat patients already diagnosed. It is also important to map other patients who have not yet been diagnosed, drastically reducing the number of complications”, says the endocrinologist of the SBD’s technology nucleus, Márcio Krakauer.
