Lyon: the imminent takeover, a new candidate on pole!

The change of owner at Olympique Lyonnais could be finalized on Monday. American investor John Textor is now the favourite, ahead of Foster Gillett, to become OL’s new majority shareholder.

Aulas will no longer be OL’s majority shareholder

Olympique Lyonnais could go under the American flag this Monday! Initially scheduled for Tuesday, the OL Groupe board meeting has just been brought forward and will take place this afternoon. According to information from RMC Sport and L’Equipe, John Textor is going to buy the shares of Path (19.38%) and IDG (19.85%), put on the market last March.

Gillett had a deal with Aulas, but…

The American businessman, owner of the Botafogo club (Brazil) and co-shareholder of Crystal Palace, would thus be ahead of Foster Gillett. The latter was however the best placed in recent weeks and the favorite of Jean-Michel Aulas. He had even come to an agreement with the Lyon president around an overall envelope of nearly 600 million euros. But the son of George Gillett, former owner of Liverpool, did not provide the necessary bank guarantees for his offer.

These two cases were the only two still in contention. And, unless Gillett has in the meantime provided the guarantees that were requested of him, Textor will win the bet. Its offer is slightly lower than that of Gillett but it provides guarantees and respects the demands of Aulas: an immediate capital increase of around 90 million euros and the assurance for JMA to remain in control of the Rhone club.

Aulas will remain president

Majority shareholder to date (27.72%), Aulas will no longer be so after the purchase of the shares of Path and IDG by Textor (ie 39.23% in total). But the Lyon president negotiated a period of governance to remain at the head of the club for a few years and thus ensure a smooth transition. President since 1987, JMA will therefore be able to continue his work next season. But a new era is about to open up at OL.
