This is indeed a bizarre film, somewhere between the comedy of the 1930s and the universe of the “Sopranos”. A grateful gangster (Bill Murray) offers a nice gift to a cop who has done him a favor (Robert De Niro): he sends him a sublime creature, to be consumed without moderation: Uma Thurman. An uncomfortable relationship develops between the two, then gradually turns into a real feeling…
Directed by John McNaughton in 1993, the film is produced by Martin Scorsese and his wife, Barbara De Fina. But the most important thing is the screenwriter: Richard Price. This one, at the time, was not yet well known. He signed some interesting screenplays, including that of “The Color of Money” and “Bad” (Michael Jackson’s music video).
“Mad Dog and Glory” will be a turning point for him: he will publish great novels, some of which will be brought to the screen: “Clockers”, “Freedomland” (“Black City, White City” in French), “The Good Samaritan” (“the Samaritan”) and “Lush Life”. His particular style – he immediately comments on the actions of characters, has them deciphered by others, giving all the keys to the reader – has been described as a mixture of Raymond Chandler and Saul Bellow.
