Meet the musical instrument to combat respiratory infections and promote the strengthening of the lungs

With the aim of promoting the recovery of respiratory infections caused by low temperatures, as well as strengthening the lungs of children in a fun, entertaining and, above all, simple way; The 3D flute is born that seeks to improve the quality of life of people suffering from respiratory problems in the country.

The project, led by the Vice Chancellor for Research at the Universidad Continental, Walter Curioso, was designed with the aim of dealing with the high number of cases of respiratory problems in our country: at least 1 in 5 children has respiratory problems (Essalud) ; 40% of pneumonia cases occur in children under 5 years of age, according to MINSA; 50% of the cases of acute respiratory infections correspond to children between 0 and 11 years old, reports EsSalud, to point out only some data.

‘Music for your lungs’ is a social innovation project developed by the Continental University, and today, after months of work, it is also part of medical research, endorsed by EsSalud Huancayo”, said the Curious doctor.

The Network of Digital Fabrication Laboratories (FabLab) of the Continental University designed a special flute, whose mouthpiece is characterized by having a larger cavity than the classic recorder and contains a reed inside that forces more force to be exerted when exhaling. breath to make sounds.

Many times, people who are recovering from respiratory conditions abandon their therapy because they find it tedious to practice the exercises with the necessary constancy, this is the main advantage of Music for your lungs: a much more entertaining and simpler innovation than the classic performed with spirometers”, added the research specialist.

Lung strengthening therapies

For their part, a team of musicians used the exercises traditionally used in lung strengthening therapies to translate them into a melody that children can easily learn. This composition consists of musical figures that, when played on this instrument, maintain a breathing dynamic that mimics lung strengthening exercises.

In order for the project to be carried out, it had a multidisciplinary team, among which we can highlight the pulmonologist doctor Félix Llanos, the musician specialized in wind instruments Aramis Salazar, the researcher Walter Curioso, the Fab Lab network team, in addition to of professionals from various areas so that the project develops properly. And today, in addition, in the research stage of the project, the participation of Dr. Fernando Carrillo as principal investigator was added.

FabLab printed, after several months of prototyping, a first batch of these flutes to be used in the research project under development, directed by the Continental University in collaboration with Essalud Huancayo. At the same time, the project’s musician, Aramis Salazar, created a tutorial so that children can learn the melody from the comfort of their home.

In this way, the Continental University seeks to generate a positive impact and make its commitment to the development of the entire community tangible through this and other initiatives that seek to improve the quality of life through science, technology, and innovation.
