Los Angeles, Oct 21 (EFE News) .- Meghan Markle, wife of Prince Henry of England, has written a letter to the United States Congress in which she demands that family conciliation be promoted and that paid leave be established for the new parents.
The letter, published on the organization’s website “Paid leave for all”, is addressed to the majority leader of the House of Representatives, Chuck Schumer, and its president, Nancy Pelosi.
In her letter, the Duchess of Sussex acknowledges that she is not “an elected official, nor is she a politician” and that she only wants to speak like “a mother” on this issue.
“Over the past 20 months, the pandemic has exposed long-standing flaws in our communities. At an alarming rate, millions of women left the workforce, stayed home with their children while schools and daycare centers were closed, and cared for their loved ones full time, ”writes Elizabeth II’s daughter-in-law.
“The working mother or father faces the conflict of being present (at home) or going out to receive a salary. This sacrifice of either of them has a great cost ”, emphasizes the Duchess, who lives with her husband and their two children in Los Angeles.
For this reason, “no family should have to choose between earning a living and having the freedom to care for their child (or a loved one or themselves)” if a comprehensive paid leave plan were established.
Markle assumes she feels privileged now but says she writes on behalf of millions of Americans who need paid leave.
When a parent takes care of “their child, they take care of their community and they take care of their country, because when paid leave is a right, we are creating a foundation that helps achieve results in mental health, health care costs and economic strength. ”, He specifies.
And finally remember that “most nations already have paid leave policies” to allow parents to take care of their children at home, while the United States does not guarantee any person even a single day of these leaves.
