MENU. Covid-19: throughout France, a fifth wave that is progressing "dazzling"

Almost the entire territory is affected by the resurgence of the virus. Only two overseas territories have seen their incidence drop in recent days.

The epidemic monitoring indicators are red. “Our epidemic situation is deteriorating”, acknowledged Gabriel Attal on Wednesday, on the eve of the announcement by Olivier Véran of new measures intended to stem the fifth wave of the Covid-19 epidemic.

Since the beginning of October, its progress has been “dazzling”, in the words of the government spokesperson: the national incidence rate, after having fallen to 43.8, below the alert threshold, has now exceeded the 190 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants – a level not seen since the summer.

Almost the entire territory is concerned: as our map below shows, only Mayotte and the Guadeloupe see their incidence rate remain below 50. Conversely, the fifth wave is particularly brutal in 8 departments, where the incidence exceeds 250, the old maximum alert threshold: the Haute-Corse, the Bouches-du-Rhône, the Country, the Lot-et-Garonne, the Hautes-Pyrenees, the Haut-Rhin, Paris and finally theArdeche, where it even borders on 400.

An incidence rate sometimes doubled in a week

The current figures are not good, nor their progress. The Guadeloupe and Guyana are the only territories that saw their incidence rate decrease over the past week, respectively by 28.1% and 23.1%.

Elsewhere, the epidemic is spreading rapidly, with growth of over 50% in a majority of departments, as shown in our map below In 21 of them, the incidence rate has even more than doubled in the last seven days: Aube, Charente, Côte-d’Or, Doubs, Hérault, Jura, Haute-Loire, Loiret, Marne, Meurthe-et-Moselle, Meuse, Orne, Puy-de-Dôme, Hautes-Pyrénées, Rhône, Saône-et-Loire, Haute-Savoie, Seine-Maritime , the Somme, the Territoire de Belfort and the Vosges

Faced with this clear observation, and to “save the end of the year celebrations”, government spokesman Gabriel Attal announced that the executive’s strategy to contain this epidemic outbreak would focus on three axes: strengthening of barrier measures, strengthening of the health pass and acceleration of the vaccination booster campaign. The government plans in particular to open this “third dose” to all, but also to tighten the conditions for obtaining the health pass for the unvaccinated, by reducing the validity period of PCR tests.
