Mexico, member of the Unesco World Heritage Committee for 2021-2025


Mexico City, Nov 25 (EFE) .- Mexico was elected this Thursday as a member of the World Heritage Committee of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco), for the period 2021-2025, reported the Secretariats of Foreign Relations and Culture.

“The Mexican candidacy is a recognition of its role as an international benchmark in promoting countless cooperation programs for the conservation of the world heritage of Mexico, Latin America and the Caribbean,” detailed the agencies in a joint statement.

Mexico, which has 35 properties inscribed on the World Heritage List (27 cultural, 6 natural and 2 mixed), received 121 votes in its candidacy, and was the country that obtained the highest number of support in the region.

After the election, Mexico undertook to share the “vast experience” of its institutions in the fields of cultural and natural heritage, in terms of conservation of the common goods of humanity and to seek synergies with other Unesco cultural conventions.

The World Heritage Committee is responsible for the implementation of the 1972 Unesco Convention on the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage and has the final decision on the inscription of a property on the Unesco World Heritage List.

It is made up of 21 States that are elected during the General Assembly of the States Parties to the Convention.

In addition to this election, this week Mexico was also elected as a member of the Unesco Executive Council, also with the highest number of votes in Latin America; While the body approved that the country be the headquarters of the World Conference on Cultural Policies and Sustainable Development (Mondiacult), which will take place from September 28 to 30, 2022.

Mondiacult, whose founding conference was held 40 years ago in Mexico, will bring together all the Ministers of Culture of the Unesco member countries in order to review and update cultural policies, in the face of the needs and challenges of our time.
