CDMX.- The Miss Rwanda pageant was suspended over allegations that the contestants suffered sexual abuse, following the arrest of the event’s organizer in April, the Ministry of Youth and Culture announced.
Dieudonne Ishimwe, a former musician popularly known as the Prince Kid, was arrested on April 27 on charges of “sexual assault-related crimes,” the Rwanda Bureau of Investigation (RIB) reported.
The Ministry of Youth and Culture said in a statement on Monday that “the Miss Rwanda pageant has been suspended pending the completion of the investigation” into the charges against Ishimwe.
The 36-year-old is suspected of assaulting former Miss Rwanda contestants at various times, RIB spokesman Thierry Murangira said at the time of the arrest.
Ishimwe runs the Rwanda Inspiration Backup company, which organizes the Miss Rwanda pageant.
Her arrest followed the announcement that a former Miss Rwanda had resigned as director of communications after four years with the company.
Miss Rwanda became part of the global Miss World pageant in 2016, according to the company’s website.
On the website it is presented as the main beauty pageant in East Africa.
