Like Mozilla’s Firefox team rolled into one Entry in the knowledge base for the browser explains, from Firefox 92 onwards the display of search suggestions when using the combined address and search bar is expanded to include so-called trusted suggestions, i.e. search suggestions from “trustworthy partners”. Basically, these are advertisements that are intended to bring Firefox users to visit certain web offers.
Firefox Suggest now also provides paid search suggestions
No data collection, privacy is preserved
Mozilla works with an external partner called AdMarketplace for the paid search suggestions, but emphasizes that no user data is collected, saved or passed on in order to implement the new advertising search suggestions. The privacy of the users should thus be preserved despite the advertising integration.
The entered search term is only passed on in order to be able to retrieve and display suitable search suggestions from a partner, according to the company. The developers emphasized that no information that could be used to identify the user is passed on. Users also have the option of checking the paid search suggestions themselves.
When installing the Firefox browser, the user will receive the offer to activate the Firefox Suggest function, but at the same time he can deactivate the paid search suggestions in the settings for privacy and security at any time. A corresponding setting can be found there in the area for the address bar.
For some time now, Mozilla Firefox has slipped into third place among the desktop browsers, after the free browser was still very popular a few years ago. Currently, the market share is only around 7.5 percent and thus even behind Microsoft Edge, while Google Chrome claims almost 70 percent of the market, at least that’s what the company said NetMarketshare statistics.
