Five Memphis, Tennessee, police officers suspended for beating a 29-year-old Fed Ex delivery boy, Tire Nichols, who died of internal bleeding three days later in hospital. The tragedy would be trivial, in the vitiated context of racial tensions across the Atlantic, if the five men were not themselves black: Thursday, Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills Jr. and Justin Smith were charged murder on Thursday, relieved of their duties and remanded in custody. They are the subject of several counts, including murder, assault and battery and kidnapping.
