In the global mobile market, the ecology formed around popular apps such as TikTok and Douyin is becoming increasingly mature. According to data from the Sensor Tower store intelligence platform, the cumulative number of TikTok and Douyin installations in the global App Store and Google Play has exceeded 3 billion. There are more than 900 applications related to TikTok and Douyin, two-thirds of which were released after January 2020.
With the global outbreak of the new crown epidemic in early 2020, the popularity of TikTok and Douyin has soared, and in the first quarter of 2020, it broke the single-season download record of a single mobile application. Short video outlets have attracted industry attention, and a large number of applications related to TikTok and Douyin have been born to obtain traffic dividends.
In 2020, there will be about 400 apps related to TikTok and Douyin on the global App Store and Google Play, which is twice the number in 2019. Although TikTok and Douyin still occupy the top download list in the world, the release speed of new applications related to them will slow down in 2021. In the first 10 months of this year, only 200 new applications were launched, which is equivalent to the scale of 2019.
As of now, TikTok and Douyin have installed approximately 3.3 billion times in the global App Store and Google Play. There are more than 900 related applications, accounting for 40% of the total number of global App Store and Google Play applications.
Among the applications related to TikTok and Douyin, 49% of the applications focus on the video download category, which allows users to download videos on the platform to their devices. The reason for the growth of such applications may be that TikTok users want to forward content to other social media and keep these content on mobile devices. Another type of application provides analysis of fans and hashtags, as well as functions to increase the number of fans and interaction. This type of application accounts for 21% of the total number of TikTok related applications.
About 6% of related apps are competitors of TikTok and Douyin. Such apps appear as alternatives to attract users’ attention. Including the Indian short video platform Josh, which was launched shortly after TikTok was removed from the Indian app store.
Although related apps around TikTok and Douyin are still being launched, the speed of launching these apps has slowed down into 2021. However, this does not mean that TikTok and Douyin have fallen in popularity, but just a sign that such applications have reached the ceiling after excessive competition. Looking to the future, more companies may choose to use TikTok for brand marketing instead of developing TikTok’s auxiliary tools.
In addition, there are some relatively niche applications surrounding TikTok. Including an aggregator application that continuously compiles videos from TikTok, and emulators such as Hype Me, allowing users to experience the experience of operating a popular TikTok account, and Addison Rae Fake Call, through which fans can simulate calls with TikTok influencer Addison Rae . With the further development of TikTok’s social attributes, the number of such applications may gradually increase in the future.
Note: Sensor Tower download data is only counted for the first installation of the App Store or Google Play account, and multiple installations of the same account on different or the same device are not counted repeatedly. Download data has been combined with multiple versions of the same application, such as Facebook and Facebook Lite.
