Nkunku now wants to take the next step in his development. “Great players are not only characterized by a good year. The best play at this level all the time. That’s my next goal”emphasizes the noble technician, whose ambitions are big: “Yes, I want to be a world footballer. That would be the biggest award you can win. It is a dream, but one should always strive for the highest.”

“The public was shocked”

Nkunku made his last appearance for the France U21 national team in 2018. With the move to Leipzig in 2019, the former PSG talent also disappeared from the scene in France. Until just that last season brought the midfielder into the center of attention with a bang.

“The French public and experts were a bit shocked – but in the best sense”rejoices Nkunku, “I got a lot of messages from my national team colleagues, the boys were very happy for me.” while having him “one or the other” France colleagues want to convince of a change of club.

According to the right foot, there were plenty of opportunities for this: “To be honest there were a few requests but RB were quick to tell me I wasn’t allowed to move.”

“An indescribable feeling”

But instead of getting frustrated because he was denied the move to an absolute top club, Nkunku extended his contract with the cup winners early until 2026. “It was the first time in my career that my club told me that I’m too important to hand myself over. That is an indescribably good feeling. This trust makes me stronger, I want to pay that back.”

And the flexible attacking player is also doing this in the current season. The 24-year-old collected seven goals in eleven competitive games. Nkunku wants to continue working on himself to be at the upcoming World Cup: “I feel like part of the team, but we could take 50 players with us, all of them World Cup format. I have no guarantee if I’m not strong at Leipzig. I have to keep working hard on myself.”
