Nvidia announces Portal With RTX, an embellished version of Valve’s title thanks to its new RTX Remix tool

More than an outpouring of generosity for owners of the original game for whom this update will be completely free when it is deployed in November, the announcement of this Portal With RTX is above all an opportunity for Nvidia to demonstrate the power of its new tool called NVIDIA RTX Remix.

A platform that will allow you to implement your own ray tracing in old games that didn’t support it until now. “Just press a shortcut to import a game, use AI to improve materials, create custom assets using Omniverse, and export a full RTX mod with ray tracing, NVIDIA DLSS 3 and NVIDIA Reflex. RTX Remix takes modding to a whole new level.“ thus proudly boasts the company in a blog post published today and stating that RTX Remix will be offered free of charge at launch, with no date announced for the moment.

A tool which, on paper, looks quite impressive, technologically speaking: “When remastering assets for use with ray tracing, every texture and surface needs Physical Rendering Materials (PBR), to allow them to interact naturally with ray tracing light (…). RTX Remix simplifies and speeds up the artistic remastering process using AI. AI Super Resolution increases the resolution of extracted textures up to 4 times, transforming 1080p textures into higher quality 4K assets. And AI Physically Based Materials analyzes the game environment to add PBR properties to all mined resources.

Portal With RTX is therefore, according to Nvidia, an example of what it will be possible to achieve thanks to its new tool for modding : “In Portal With RTX, full ray tracing transforms every level, allowing light to bounce around and be affected by scene geometry and materials. Every light is ray-traced and casts shadows, indirect global illumination naturally brightens and darkens rooms, volumetric ray-traced lighting diffuses through fog and smoke, and shadows are pixel perfect.“In short, some very fine promises that we will judge on the spot when this update is deployed during the month of November.
