Nvidia: DLSS 3 promises up to 4 times better performance

In addition to unveiling a new generation of graphics cards, Nvidia presents DLSS 3. The green giant continues to improve its technology and announces performance up to 4 times better. About thirty games and applications will soon be supported.

It’s the big day for Nvidia, which took advantage of its GTC 2022 to multiply the announcements. The highlight of this meeting is obviously the presentation of a new generation of graphics cards. Series GeForce RTX 40 points the tip of its nose with the announcement of new GPUs, including the GeForce RTX 4090 and GeForce RTX 4080. Learn more about these new cards in this article.

Good news never comes alone, Nvidia also introduced DLSS 3. A significant announcement for the greens who rely heavily on this proprietary “intelligent” upscaling technology. DLSS 3 claims up to 4 times better performance to those of raw rendering and incorporates Reflex technology. The latter should help minimize latency and provide better responsiveness.

DLSS (for Deep Learning super sampling) 3 takes advantage of new Tensor Cores fourth generation. The firm’s latest high-end GPU has some 1,400 units, compared to 320 Tensor cores for the most powerful Ampere GPU. The oversampling technology also relies on the new optical flow accelerator GeForce RTX 40X0s.

Nvidia’s DLSS goes third

Concretely, Nvidia explains that DLSS 3 will analyze sequential images and motion data from this new accelerator in order to create additional images. Known as Optical Multi Frame Generation, it will generate entirely new images and not just pixels. Additionally, this technology runs as a post-process on the GPU and can therefore improve frame rate even if a game is CPU limited. According to the chameleon firm, DLSS 3 allows a frame rate up to twice that which the processor can calculate.

During his presentation, Nvidia has shown the effectiveness of DLSS 3 on a title like Cyberpunk 2077 ; going from less than 30 fps to nearly 100 fps. For comparison, DLSS 2 achieved around 60 fps.

Still with DLSS 3, Nvidia doubles the number of frames per second on Microsoft Flight Simulator (from around 50 to over 100 fps). Note that the firm did not specify the exact settings and the definition during its demo.

DLSS 3 also seems reserved for GeForce RTX 40X0 GPUs.

More than 35 games and applications will support DLSS 3

While DLSS is now available on 216 games and applications, Nvidia is pushing for titles to support DLSS 3. During its event, the brand clarified that the technology will integrate game engines such as Unity and Unreal Engine .
