The chairman of the Order of Physicians, Miguel Guimarães.

The Order of Doctors said today that it has been waiting for a response from the Centro Hospitalar Lisboa Ocidental for five days to the request it made about the measures taken to ensure the “proper functioning” of the general emergency of Hospital São Francisco Xavier.

“For five days and until now, and after insistence, no response has been obtained from the board of directors” of the Centro Hospitalar Lisboa Ocidental (CHLO) that integrates the S. Francisco Xavier and Egas Moniz hospitals, says the Order of Physicians in a statement.

The request for information and clarifications made by the chairman of the doctors follows the resignation of the team leaders of the São Francisco Xavier emergency service, known on Friday, pointing out that the planning of the scale for the month of August, which foresees that the constitution of the teams of the general emergency service is ensured only by a hospital assistant (with a leadership role) and a general training intern.

After becoming aware of this situation, which “would affect the normal functioning of the general emergency service (SUG)” of the hospital as of today, the chairman of the OM, Miguel Guimarães, asked for clarification on the situation in question and the measures taken to ensure the good functioning of the general emergency of that hospital, avoiding the dismissal en bloc of all its team leaders.

“Based on the information we have, we reiterate our full support to the group of Hospital Assistants of Internal Medicine, in the patient advocacy and in particular its safety and clinical quality”, he stresses in the statement.

For the order, the decision of the board of directors not to comply with the standard teams and scales appropriate to the needs of patients, means being “voluntarily to decrease the safety and clinical quality of the services provided, to increase the levels of ‘burnout’ and ethical suffering of physicians, and to substantively impair medical education”.

“All these situations are of concern to the Ordem dos Médicos and will be the target of special interventionif the board of directors of that hospital maintains the decision already contested by the doctors”, he warns.

For the Ordem dos Médicos, “it is not acceptable that, in a specialty such as Internal Medicine”, the general emergency service is weakened, namely without a specialist on the scale (the position and functions of team leader is different from the full exercise of the specialist role).

In a letter sent at the end of the week to the Board of Directors and the Directorate of the General Emergency Service of the CHLO, the team leaders of the emergency service state that “the ability to assist and care for people who use the SUG of the Center will not be guaranteed. Hospitalar de Lisboa Ocidental (CHLO) nor their safety and the professionals who assist them”.

After a meeting with the professionals, the CHLO Board of Directors said they had ensured “minimum conditions” for the operation of the emergency room of Hospital São Francisco Xavier.
