Paralympic prize for ARD and ZDF

Mainz (ots)

On Saturday, November 26, 2022, ARD and ZDF received the honorary award of the German Disabled Sports Association for the broadcast of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Summer Games, which took place in late summer 2021 due to the corona. Also due to corona, the prize gala was canceled last year and has now been made up for in the Düsseldorf Rheinterrassen.

According to the award jury, in the Paralympics year 2021, ARD and ZDF contributed with their contributions – both on television and online – to getting people excited about para sports. Friedhelm Julius Beucher, President of the German Disabled Sports Association, paid tribute to the long-standing commitment of the public broadcasters, which has meant that para-sport is no longer a niche topic.

The Winter Paralympics in Beijing showed this again in March 2022. ARD and ZDF reported live, online and in summaries about the World Games for people with disabilities and were able to increase both the number of viewers in the TV broadcasts and the visits to the media libraries of both broadcasters compared to the Winter Paralympics 2018.

In Düsseldorf, ARD sports coordinator Axel Balkausky and the designated new ZDF sports director Yorck Polus accepted the honorary award for Paralympics coverage. The para athletes of the year 2022 were also announced and honored at the awards gala. Monoskier Anna-Lena Forster was honored as Para Athlete 2022, and Marco Maier (Para Ski Nordic) as Para Athlete 2022, both successful at the Winter Paralympics in Beijing.

Already in the summer of this year, the German Paralympics Media Award was given to the “sportstudio reportage: Josia Topf – The story of a fighter: How a para athlete pursues his medal dream”. This was the first part of a long-term documentary that accompanies the para-swimmer Josia Topf on his way from the 2021 Paralympics in Tokyo to the 2024 Paralympics in Paris.
