Pixel 6a finally presented and another surprise: Pixel 7 teaser

The Google Pixel 6a is official. The company presented its latest smartphone at Google I/O. As you’d expect, the device is smaller and cheaper than the Pixel 6 but inherits the Tensor chip. And then there was another surprise: pictures of the Pixel 7.

Pixel 6a saves on the display, storage and cameras

The Pixel 6a was no longer much of a surprise and brought everything that could be expected to the Google I/O stage. Google completely adopts the design of the big device brothers Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, but makes the newcomer much more compact. Also adopted by the family: With a price of 499 US dollars, you also directly adopt the price tag of the Pixel 5a. In the USA, pre-orders start on July 28th, in Germany it starts from 459 euros “from this summer”. A bit disappointing: Android 13 doesn’t make it to the launch on the device, it comes with Android 12.

Inside, too, the new pixel is characterized by well-known hardware. Google also uses the Tensor SoC that is used in the 6 and 6 Pro. This is the first time a “uniform hardware system has been developed that we can scale across the entire pixel portfolio.” One of the advantages: Google wants to deliver security updates for five years. But there are cuts in the working memory, which is shrinking from 8 to 6 GB. Speaking of memory: 128 GB of main memory is standard, there are no other options. At 4410 mAh, the battery is almost on par with the Pixel 6, which offers 4610 mAh.

Google makes further savings with the camera system. The Pixel 6 offers 50 MP wide angle and 12 MP ultra wide angle, which are supplemented with 48 MP telephoto in the Pro model, but you have to be content with the Pixel 6a with 12.2 MP wide angle and 12 MP ultra wide angle. The laser autofocus is also deleted, and “Dual Pixel Phase Detection” works in the 6a. The front camera, on the other hand, was taken over from the Pixel 6 and also offers 8 megapixels here.

Last stop for red pencils: the display. The Pixel 6a has an FHD+ OLED panel with a refresh rate of 60 Hz – the big brothers have 90 or 120 Hz here, paired with an even better resolution in the Pro.

Surprise: Pixel 7 to see

And then there was another real surprise on the I/O stage: It was foreseeable that the Google Pixel 7 would be released this fall. However, the developers wanted to anticipate the usual leaks and already showed the design of the devices. You can see: the entire camera bar and the crop frame are made of aluminum. The “next generation of the tensor chip” should also do its work inside, which can then also drive Android 13 from the launch. However, there is no more information at the moment.
