PlayStation VR2: Sony delivers new information on its second virtual reality headset

The PlayStation VR2 virtual reality headset will come with handy features like viewing its surroundings, defining play zones, broadcasting you playing games, and a specific display mode for watching movies.

Sony continues to lift the veil on its future virtual reality headset for the PlayStation 5 game console. After showing the design of the device and indicating that it will be thinner and lighter than the first version, the manufacturer gave user experience details.

First of all, a mode will allow you to see your real environment thanks to the camera installed on the helmet. This will allow you to easily find where your game controllers are, for example, without having to remove the headset.

It will also be possible to define a game zone, with alerts if you leave this zone. This will be practical, for example, in your living room so as not to accidentally hit a piece of furniture, or even your television.

You define your play area thanks to the on-board cameras and with the help of gamepads, as on most competing virtual reality headsets.

Sony has also provided a function to film you playing and broadcast the video. To do this, you must connect a PS5 HD camera to the console. The broadcast features footage of the game and yourself.

Finally, the helmet has a VR mode, but also a Cinematic mode. VR mode allows you to enjoy a 360-degree virtual environment. Content is displayed in HDR with a resolution of 4000 x 2040 pixels (2000 x 2040 pixels per eye) and a frequency of 90 or 120 Hz. In Cinematic mode, the display changes to 1920×1080 pixels in HDR, with a frequency of from 24 Hz to 120 Hz. This mode is intended particularly for home cinema sessions, as well as for displaying the interface and games that are not in VR.

Sony’s release date for its PlayStation VR2 headset is not yet known.
