Real Madrid continue to impress in La Liga. On Sunday night, Real defeated rivals Atlético Madrid and regained the lead in the league. Real star Vinícius Júnior did not receive a dividend, but the talk was still about him.
The Spanish football giants Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid collided on Sunday evening in a charged derby.
Much of the talk afterwards came to be about Real star Vinícius Júnior. Before the match, videos were published of hundreds of Atlético supporters outside the stadium chanting chants about the Brazilian star: “Vinícius, you are a monkey”.
The Atlético supporters have been annoyed by Vinícius’ dances in connection with goal celebrations. Vinícius has been criticized for not respecting the opponents.
The president of the players’ agents, Pedro Bravo, stole the headlines this week when he said the player should not behave like a monkey when celebrating goals. Bravo later apologized, but said the choice of words should not be interpreted as racism.
Vinícius’ compatriot Rodrygo was again allowed to start in the absence of goal-stealer Karim Benzema due to injury. Benzema was forced to sit out for the third time in a row.
In the derby, Rodrygo gave Real the lead in the 18th minute. Vinícius and Rodrygo offered their usual samba-like dance at the corner flag and objects were thrown onto the pitch. According to the news agency AP, the reaction of the home supporters was nevertheless quite restrained.
Federico Valverde made it 2–0 in the 36th. With just under ten minutes remaining, Mario Hermoso reduced the deficit, but Atlético got no closer, and Real won 2–1. The victory was the ninth in a row for the big club and the balance in the league is 6–0–0.
