The Ministry of Health of Chile reported today that In the last 24 hours, 1,223 positive cases of coronavirus were registered. This is the highest figure recorded since August 5, that is, in exactly 70 days.
Of the 1,223 new cases detected during the last day in Chile, 21% are diagnosed by antigen test, 16% originate from Active Case Search (BAC) and 22% of those reported are asymptomatic, affirmed the Health portfolio of the neighboring country.
The number of infections shows an increase of 28% compared to a week ago and 41% when compared to two weeks ago. Regrowth is also confirmed by the increase in the positivity rate of PCR tests in Chile: step to be 2.42%.
On the other hand, it was reported that the occupancy of intensive care beds in the country is 85%. Of the total number of people hospitalized, there are 380 coronavirus patients, 280 of whom are in serious condition and undergoing mechanical ventilation.
The Delta variant, firm
Chilean health authorities reported that the Delta variant of the coronavirus represented 78.6% of the samples sequenced during the last week of September. Although only 3% of the total samples are sequenced, that figure shows the prevalence of this mutation in the trans-Andean country and that it is the one behind the new regrowth.
This is due to its very high potential for contagion between contacts related to a confirmed or suspected case, the infectologist of the German Clinic, Sebastin Solar, told La Tercera.
For his part, for the virologist and associate professor of the Department of Infectious Diseases and Pediatric Immunology of the Catholic University, Rafael Medina, infections will continue to increase, although not in the same way as in previous waves.
