For a long time there were growing signs that César Azpilicueta was leaving Stamford Bridge. Now the sudden turnaround. The 32-year-old Spaniard is said to have extended his contract with Chelsea by a year.
According to ‘The Athletic’, Azpilicueta has committed to the Blues until 2024. The captain’s contract was previously only dated until 2023, but a farewell this summer was in the air the whole time. Discussions between the right foot and FC Barcelona have been reported in recent weeks – apparently without success.
The transfer is now apparently off the table and Azpilicueta remains – somewhat surprisingly – in London. According to the report, Chelsea’s new management has given Azpilicueta a high priority and ultimately convinced the leader to stay.
