Retirement reality is getting a lot of international attention

Even before Norway’s liveliest has managed to show the first episode on the TV screen, production companies from all over the world have shown interest in buying the Norwegian program concept.

In Norway’s most active, which premieres on 27 June on TV 2, we get to know ten active Norwegians in their 70s and 80s who will fight to become Norway’s most active.

Program director Erik Solbakken (37) is the creator behind the concept, together with producer Jørgen Høst. Together they run the production company Montreux.

– This is an extra feather in the cap for us. Many of the programs in Norway are originally from an international format, and then it’s extra cool that we as a small production company make something that creates such great interest internationally, Solbakken tells TV 2.

It was Campaign who mentioned the case first.

Retirees without filter

In a reality world where young, well-trained and tanned bodies have become the big winner, one may wonder where the idea of retired reality arose.

Solbakken can reveal that the inspiration is taken from a program many know from earlier in his career.

– Both Jørgen and I worked with the program Karl Johan on NRK, and there we ended up stopping a number of pensioners on the street. Older people do not have the same filter as the young, and they have lived so long that they do not have to pretend anymore, says the host and adds:

– It is very liberating to work with pensioners, so we thought why not gather a gang and challenge them both physically and mentally?

Norway’s fittest was actually to be produced a few years ago, but had to be put on hiatus due to the pandemic.

– I think it is extra good that this program is coming now, since pensioners have been so much referred to as the “risk group” gang in recent years. Now our participants are shown how active you can actually be in retirement age.

International interest

Solbakken can tell that there is a great focus on Nordic TV formats internationally, and that many production companies get what comes from newer programs.

The response has been overwhelming since their program concept became known to the public.

– It is everything from the largest production companies in the world to smaller companies that have shown interest in the program.

But the duo in Montreux are in no hurry to sell the program, yet.

– We want to show the program in Norway first. And then it’s important to us that we sell the concept to someone who really wants it.

– We hope that as many as possible open their eyes to the program. Now, I’m not particularly objective, but this is an entertaining bunch that you fall in love with. And hopefully they will inspire the viewers out there to speed up the training.

And for those who are afraid that there are not enough well-trained bodies in Norway’s most active, the host can entice with this:

– There are several of the participants who have impressive physique, and I would almost say that some of them can challenge the well-trained 22-year-olds we are used to seeing in reality.

Norway’s fittest premieres on Monday 27 June at 20.00 on TV 2.
