Roccat Burst Pro Air review: versatility, freedom and RGB for this mouse

Roccat offers its Burst range with the Burst Pro Air, a relatively light wireless gaming mouse featuring unique RGB lighting. Does she have the arguments to convince the players? Answer in our comprehensive test.

The mouse gamer Roccat Burst Pro Air is positioned as a pragmatic but versatile model thanks to its triple connectivity. Its symmetrical shape (but not ambidextrous) places it in front of models that have already passed through our hands, such as the Aerox 3 from SteelSeries.

However, it is not the lightest on the market, far from it. For the rest, it includes everything you expect from a good mouse gamer with a well-known optical sensor, configurable buttons and bright RGB lighting. This new mouse is offered at the recommended price of 99 euros.

A simple and original mouse at the same time

The Roccat Burst Pro Air doesn’t necessarily stand out for its shape and ergonomics. We are here facing a symmetrical model (without being ambidextrous) which allows most grips and can thus be suitable for the greatest number.

Far from being ergonomic, the mouse falls perfectly in the palm of the hand and is similar to already well-known models such as certain references from SteelSeries or even Razer. Slightly domed on the back, it has a slightly bulkier rear end to fit comfortably in the palm of your palm.

Entirely made of plastic, the Burst Pro Air features a honeycomb pattern on its edges which improves the grip somewhat. This pattern is also found in the RGB lighting that runs along the entire upper part of the shell and the buttons. As always, Roccat pulls out all the stops on this point and it’s quite convincing.

The two main clicks are separated from the rest of the chassis and offer a firm and clearly audible activation. An assertion also valid for the two side buttons which also have the advantage of falling perfectly under the thumb. As indicated above, only the left edge accommodates additional buttons.

The wheel offers sufficiently marked notches which make it pleasant to use. The click is also very firm and somewhat lacking in responsiveness. Nothing unacceptable, however, since it will take a few hours of use to get used to it. This wheel is also accompanied by a button dedicated to switching between sensitivity profiles.

Under the chassis, the Burst Pro Air has two large skids that allow it to move very efficiently on our fabric mat. As on the vast majority of wireless mice, there is a switch that helps to switch between the 3 connectivities: wired, 2.4 GHz wireless and Bluetooth. A pairing button is also included.

The wireless link is logically ensured by a dongle very compact. However, the Burst Pro Air can also be used wired using the cable provided in the box. The latter is very flexible, as always with Roccat. Finally, note that, despite all the promotion made of it by Roccat, the Burst Pro Air is not a particularly light mouse. It exceeds 80 g on our scale, which places it far from the best students in the sector.

This new mouse is nonetheless very well built and is positioned as a simple and effective model, both in terms of ergonomics and comfort. It offers enough freedom to suit all grip styles.

Full functions and big update problem

Before going any further, we think it’s important to tell you about a problem we encountered with the Burst Pro Air. It worked perfectly until the arrival of an update which simply made it inoperable wirelessly. The update in question was requested by Swarm each time you logged in, but it never seemed to work.

As a result of this, it was therefore impossible to use the mouse via the 2.4 GHz link. We asked Roccat to provide us with a second copy, the first could be defective. However, we had the exact same problem with the second mouse. Moreover, a quick search on Reddit allowed us to see that we were not the only ones affected.

In fact, without a solution, and even if none of our colleagues seem to have encountered this problem, we must take it into account in the rating of the Burst Pro Air and we therefore deduct one point. This judgment may be reassessed in the future.

We were still able to use the mouse wirelessly before performing the update and it remains perfectly usable wired. It is therefore always the Swarm software which is in charge and which offers multiple functionalities. The first tab is particularly dedicated to the behavior of the pointer and the sensitivity of the optical sensor.

All buttons can be reassigned with the functions of our choice from a generously provided list. The lighting effects are also customizable and can be synchronized with the brand’s other peripherals connected to the PC.

Finally, the last tab has various settings related to the wireless link and the battery. In particular, it will be possible to display the battery level in the Windows taskbar to always have an eye on it. Different options to relieve the battery of the Burst Pro Air are also present.

All settings can be saved in profiles that can automatically activate depending on the game or application in use. Roccat Swarm remains a safe bet thanks to its multiple settings that help to configure in detail the operation of its mouse.

Autonomy and connectivity

The wireless link via the dongle wireless was consistent throughout our test. As often, the latency is imperceptible and we did not notice any signal cuts or any dropouts. The Burst Pro Air is also able to connect via Bluetooth to more or less any device. In this configuration, performance is logically limited and this use is only recommended for office automation or undemanding games.

On the autonomy side, Roccat announces no less than 100 hours without specifying whether it is a measurement carried out in Bluetooth or via the dongle. During our tests, we were able to use the mouse for one to two weeks with its default settings, and therefore at 2.4 GHz.

That’s about 80 hours of actual use. An honorable score, but far from the best mice on the market. Disabling RGB lighting or using Bluetooth can logically achieve greater autonomy.

Note also that the mouse has a fast charge which offers 5 hours of use in just 10 minutes of charging. A significant asset that will potentially avoid having to use a cable for too long when you haven’t thought to put the Burst Pro Air on charge.

A simply effective mouse

Roccat equipped the Burst Pro Air with the same optical sensor.Owl-Eye» that the Kone XP passed through our hands previously. We didn’t worry too much about the performance of this new model.

Concretely, the performances are exemplary with a sensor that responds to the finger and the eye. In addition, it can be set in increments of 50 up to 19,000 DPI. During our test period, we were able to put the mouse to the test on FPS without feeling the slightest problem of capturing movements or any dropouts.

The mouse is perfectly precise and can therefore accompany the most demanding players without any difficulty. It is recalled that the optical sensor offered is actually a redesigned PixArt PAW3370 that has been found on many high-end mice for a while. It is therefore not surprising that the Roccat model offers excellent performance without overdoing it since it is satisfied with a classic interrogation rate of 1000 Hz.

A quick word on the sliding of the mouse which is also very convincing. Put to the test on a very classic fabric carpet, the two large runners do their job perfectly and offer a really efficient glide, although the underside of the chassis tends to rub slightly.
