At the SILBERSALZ Festival in Halle/Saale from June 15th to 19th, everything revolves around science, media and education. This Friday, MDR program director Halle, Jana Brandt, will present the MDR Science & Media Award for the first time.

MDR program director Jana Brandt: “We are always looking for ways to fulfill our core tasks. Therefore, we have a special focus on the topics of education and knowledge transfer. The SILBERSALZ Festival offers a great opportunity for this, because the festival, which is unique in Germany, combines science and education in a wonderful way and takes place on our doorstep. That is why we have once again increased our commitment compared to previous years.”

For the first time this year, the MDR offered its own MDR Science & Media Award. We were looking for an impressive film that takes a special look at a scientific and socially relevant topic. The jury, made up of Ines Hoge-Lorenz (Director of the Saxony-Anhalt State Broadcasting House), Daniel Vogelsberg (Editor MDR Knowledge) and Carsten Dufner (Editor MDR WISSEN) were particularly touched by the documentary “Macher sur l’eau – Above Water”. The film wins prize money of 2,000 euros and is shown on MDR.

The MDR commitment

For the first time, MDR and SILBERSALZ Festival are jointly streaming six talks from the Ulrichskirche at and The festival is also a science partner of the MDR.

A special focus this year is on youth work and education. In the project “What future do I want? What future do I have?” On Wednesday, June 15, 140 schoolchildren from Saxony-Anhalt discussed with experts from science and the media in the Leopoldina the question of what each of us has to do in a democracy or what can afford. It is about facets of social participation and existing and future democracy. Partners are the SILBERSALZ Festival, the Leopoldina, the state center for political education in Saxony-Anhalt and the MDR.

On Sunday, June 19 at 11 p.m., MDR television will show a film from last year’s festival: “Shadow Game” about the dramatic situations that children and young people experience when fleeing.
