Serious accident: SUV drives into Apple store near Boston

In a suburb of the US east coast metropolis of Boston, a serious accident apparently occurred when an off-road vehicle apparently drove into an Apple store without braking. One man was killed and at least 19 were injured. The cause of the incident is unclear.

Like the local newspaper Patriot Ledger and the TV station NBC Boston report, according to the current state of knowledge, a black SUV drove through the large glass panes of the Apple Store shortly before 11 a.m. yesterday, the part of a shopping center called Derby Street Shops in the town of Hingham about 12 miles south of Boston.

The vehicle only came to a stop at the back wall of the large sales room typical of Apple stores, with at least four people being trapped by the car, according to the fire department. According to the responsible district attorney, a 65-year-old man was killed in the accident, while a total of 19 other victims, some of them seriously injured, are said to have been injured.

Footage from NBC shows the car tore a large hole in the Apple store’s windows. The Toyota SUV allegedly first rammed a telephone pole in front of the store before driving into the store. Overall, the car was massively damaged according to the images of the camera teams on site. However, the driver himself is said not to have been taken to the hospital. According to eyewitnesses, the Apple Store in Hingham was already heavily frequented at the time of the accident. The injured are said to have been both outside and inside the store when the crash happened. Apple has since closed the store completely and had the front barricaded with large wooden panels.

The company pledged its full support to the store staff and customers. All of the rest of the Hingham shopping center has also been closed for the time being, save for one large grocery store. The authorities want to determine the reasons for the accident as soon as possible and have initially initiated a criminal investigation, it is said.
