With the 1: 3 defeat at Sporting Lisbon, Borussia Dortmund was finally eliminated from the Champions League on Wednesday evening. The black and yellow will only play in the Europa League next year. After the final whistle in the Portuguese capital, captain Marco Reus was the first to step in front of the microphones – and let off steam.

“That was a shitty evening. We’re out, that’s the bitter truth,” said Reus in the “Dazn” interview. The defeat was “completely unnecessary”. “Sporting didn’t do anything for the game and won 3-1. It’s hard to find words. It’s difficult to accept. ”

Individual mistakes put Lisbon on the road to victory

What particularly annoys the national player: BVB was significantly better than the Portuguese. His team didn’t play their best game, “but we had it under control until the 0-1. That was completely unnecessary today, in a game like this it’s of course bitter.”

“We don’t need to point to individuals now, we didn’t bring it to the field today as a collective”

In fact, Dortmund had the game under control for a long time. But then, in the 30th minute, defender Nico Schulz misjudged himself with a long ball – and Lisbon took the lead out of nowhere. Dortmund had “made too many individual mistakes” and thus brought Sporting into play, explained Reus, who also emphasized: “We don’t need to point to individuals now, we didn’t bring it to the field as a collective today.”

Already the third defeat in a row

For Dortmund, the bankruptcy in Lisbon is the third defeat in a row in this year’s Champions League season. On the last group match day on December 7th, BVB will face Besiktas Istanbul and then have the opportunity to say goodbye to the competition with a win. Because the Borussia are eliminated from the Champions League in any case. Next year they’ll compete in the Europa League.
