Show: 25 years: Apollo Varieté in Düsseldorf celebrates its anniversary

Dusseldorf.
Roncalli’s Apollo Varieté has been entertaining audiences on the Rhine promenade for 25 years. There is an anniversary show – and emotional memories.

Dance, theatre, acrobatics and comedy in close proximity to the banks of the Rhine in Düsseldorf – this has been happening for a quarter of a century now. Roncalli’s Apollo Varieté has been entertaining tourists and locals alike in the state capital since October 17, 1997. It goes without saying that there has to be a separate program for this occasion. Titled without frills, “25 – the big anniversary show” will be shown on the spot until October 23.

At least one returnee is part of the ensemble. Robert Wicke came into contact with the art of beatboxing at the age of 15. Today, the 46-year-old is a frequently booked artist in circuses and variety theaters and has been seen regularly in Roncalli productions since 2016. Born in Hanover, he not only masters the imitation of rhythms with his mouth, but also brings comedic talent to the stage.

Members of the Circus Theater Bingo from the Ukraine have also been seen in the Theater an der Rheinpromenade. With Anna Pees, Anton Shcherbyna and the duo Dimitri & Vitaly, four up-and-coming talents from their ranks are part of the new Apollo program. They present a mixture of aerial and floor acrobatics, juggling and dance.

Apollo Varieté: Magicians with royal family experience

Daniel Rose, on the other hand, is new to the squad. The magician has been on the stage of the legendary Hippodrome Circus in Great Yarmouth, England, more than 60 times, and has also performed for the Danish, Greek and even Saudi Arabian royal family. There are also culinary tips of a special kind: Rose shows how to prepare a perfect “French omelette”. It’s just a shame that magicians always keep their tricks – or shall we say recipes – to themselves.

Trained at the National School Of Circus in Cuba, Nirio Rodriguez Tejeda has now found his way to Europe. Totally trained, Teleja pushes herself from the horizontal to the vertical and presents handstand variations at the highest technical level. Another young man completes the program. 21-year-old Vioris Zoppis has already won the “Golden Clown”, a prize at the prestigious Monte Carlo International Circus Festival. He is an artist in the sixth generation of the family and is now showing a performance on the straps in the Apollo.

The oldest artist was 98 years old

After 25 years, it is of course also time to look back: The performance of the 98-year-old Konrad Thurano in April 2007 is the most memorable for the company team. The tightrope artist, discovered in 1924 in a Düsseldorf lido, performed in numerous well-known show theaters around the world and, until his death in November 2007, returned to the Apollo Varieté every year as a guest for his birthday. “We will never forget the sight of how he performed acrobatics on stage with his son at this very old age,” says the Apollo team. A bust in the “Apollo Star Gallery” in the foyer of the house is reminiscent of him.

Three special events are also planned until the end of “25 – the big anniversary show” at the end of October. On September 6, The Firebirds will perform big hits from the 50s and 60s in “Jukebox – the Rock’n’Roll Show”, and exactly three weeks later, Sascha Klaar, a Düsseldorf local hero and entertainer, will be performing. The pianist invites three other pianists, the quartet, accompanied by saxophone and drums, puts together a music program called “Duelling Pianos”. And on the anniversary day, October 17th, there will be a special celebration of 25 years of Apollo Varieté – but more details will follow.
