We were impatiently waiting for it, the successor to the Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones is coming and is called, without surprise, WH-1000XM5. More design, more efficient but also more expensive than its predecessor!
The 5th generation of Sony’s 1000XM is finally announced for the end of May 2022, with heavy specs and light design.
Sony WH-1000XM5: A new design bias
Completely different from the WH-1000XM4, the WH-1000XM5 has a thinner, more sophisticated and more elegant headband. Very flexible, its new headband is however not foldable but it slides silently this time. Its pads are made of soft, non-removable imitation leather, but the good news is that the wearing detection sensor is no longer visible in the pad at all. The controls are still touch-sensitive on the right, non-customizable, but one of the two physical buttons can be customized for ANC or voice assistants. The helmet comes with a fairly compact carrying case that has the good idea of compressing a little to take up less empty space. Another good point for Sony, the packaging is made of recycled paper without any plastic.
Active noise reduction that wants to be the best on the market
In terms of specs, the Sony WH-1000XM5 now has 8 microphones instead of 4 for its predecessor. The manufacturer thus announces the best ANC on the market for wireless headband headphones according to its in-house study based on the criteria of the JEITA association (Japan Electronic Industries Development Association). We will tell you that after the tests in our guide to headphones with ANC!
Sony WH-1000XM5: promising specs
We find the Sony LDAC codec and still no aptX in addition to the SBC. Sony’s in-house codec still allows you to listen to near Hi-Res quality sound via Bluetooth. There is also the intelligent DSEE Extreme upscaler which works on the sound quality at the output to get closer to Hi-Res. Sony has also worked on call quality, a weak point of the 1000XM4, by doubling the number of microphones dedicated to the user’s voice. Sony has added in its new helmet a physical protection against the wind and a Speak-to-chat function to mute the music by voice command in order to speak without removing his helmet.
On the autonomy side, we are still on around thirty hours, with a quick charge of 3 minutes for an hour of reading or 30 minutes for 5 hours.
Sony WH-1000XM5: A rising price
Announced at €420, there is a nice inflation there compared to its ancestor (€40 more), but it is still far from the most expensive in this category of headphones with ANC. Available in two colors: matte black and silver. No specific launch offer for its release 🙁
