South Africa detects another covid variant with large number of mutations

Mexico City.- A new variant of covid-19 was detected in South Africa, the country most officially affected by the pandemic and which is registering a new increase in infections, scientists announced on Thursday.

“Unfortunately, we have detected a new variant that is a cause for concern in South Africa,” virologist Tulio de Oliveira said at a press conference.

The variant whose scientific code is B.1.1.529, “has a high number of mutations,” he continued.

It has also been detected in Botswana and Hong Kong among travelers from South Africa.

Health Minister Joe Phaahla stated that this variant is “very worrying” and is the source of the “exponential” increase in the number of cases found in the country.

Infections soared to more than 1,200 cases on Wednesday, against about 100 daily at the beginning of this month.

Last year, South Africa detected the Beta variant, but now the number of infections has rebounded from the Delta, originally detected in India.

With around 2.95 million cases and 89,657 deaths, it is the most affected country on the African continent.
