– There are many who do not need international protection. People from Pakistan, Burundi and India, said the EU’s Home Affairs Commissioner, Ylva Johansson, at a press conference on Monday.
Johansson wants a faster return of those who do not have the right to stay in Europe. It is one of the points in the crisis plan.
She nevertheless emphasizes that Europe needs labor and that there must be legal routes for labor immigration to the EU.
Many of the migrants who come to Europe travel in flimsy boats across the Mediterranean.
The 234 migrants on board the Ocean Viking triggered a diplomatic row between Italy and France two weeks ago. The Norwegian-owned boat is leased to the organization SOS Mediterranée, which rescues migrants in the Mediterranean.
After over a week at sea with several sick migrants on board, France allowed the ship to dock.
It will now be investigated whether new guidelines are needed for ships that pick up migrants. This is just one of twenty points in the plan, which comes as a result of an increased influx of refugees and asylum seekers to Europe.
Crisis meeting Friday
The plan will be discussed at an extraordinary meeting of the EU’s justice and interior ministers on Friday. It is still unclear whether Norway will participate in the meeting. The Norwegian Minister of Justice is invited to meetings concerning Schengen cooperation.
– Too many of those who come are helped by people smugglers. Around 90 percent. And some lose their lives, emphasizes Johansson.
As many refugees and asylum seekers have arrived in the EU this year as in 2016. So far, over 275,000 people have arrived without residence. Several countries are struggling to accept the migrants. In Austria, tent camps have been set up for the migrants.
