Summer substitutes ask for time off during the joint holiday – here they entice with a bonus

The trend of summer temps and part-time employees asking for time off in the summer is increasing this year, according to Bjørn Wiik, Executive Vice President for Commercial Activities at Adecco Norway.

– More students want time off in the summer, as demand for hands is at its most intense, Wiik says to TV 2.

The executive vice president says it may be because more students work during their studies and need a holiday. But Wiik also points to another reason.

– It has become common to take holidays in the summer job, he says.

Lures with bonus

Lack of employees has led some employers to entice with better conditions.

Among other things, Vefsen municipality in Nordland, Trondheim municipality and Porsgrunn municipality in Telemark offer summer substitutes 10,000, 15,000 and 20,000 kroner respectively in bonuses if they can work the six-week connections.

The bonus applies to substitutes in the health and care service.

– The salary compensation is an attempt to be able to recruit substitutes, so that the permanent employees can take a holiday. There is a rift about the employees now, and it is difficult to recruit, says municipal manager for health and care, Rachel Elise Berg, in Vefsen municipality to TV 2.

The challenge for the municipality has been to have enough substitutes in the health and care service from mid-July until school starts in mid-August. That is when the substitutes themselves want time off, says Berg.

That is why there are requirements for working for six consecutive weeks, the municipal manager states.

It was Helgelendingen, Telemark newspaper and Adresseavisen who first mentioned the bonuses.

The bonus that Porsgrunn municipality offers is reserved for nursing and nursing students who are in their third year of study, writes

Trondheim municipality also offers 20,000 to permanent employees who do not take a holiday in week 26-32.

No holiday entitlement

Wiik in Adecco points out that the summer is a good opportunity to work extra as a student.

– A summer job can provide useful work experience, at the same time as you get extra money to spend. This year there are more vacancies for summer jobs than applicants. More students want a free period, which means that more people work shorter time intervals, says Wiik.

There are some industries that stand out when it comes to labor shortages. In general, there is a shortage of health and care personnel in Norway.

Adecco reports the following companies that are having great difficulty in obtaining enough summer substitutes this year:

  • Production staff, cutters and butchers
  • Logistics staff both with and without a truck driver’s license
  • Chefs (very difficult, and in some cases completely impossible)
  • Waiters
  • Drivers with both class B and not least class C.

Youth adviser Sindre Hornes in LO’s Summer Patrol says their impression is that many young people are willing to work.

– They see the summer job as a valuable experience and entrance to working life. At the same time, there are students who have had a lot to do throughout the year and therefore want some time off in the summer. Especially those who work part-time all year round may need a respite in the summer, he says.

Hornes in LO’s Summer Patrol emphasizes that as a summer substitute you are not entitled to have your holiday wishes fulfilled.

As a summer substitute, you are not entitled to have your holiday wishes fulfilled, at the same time as you are not obliged to work all summer until you have signed a contract. This must be agreed with the employer in advance. It is very important to keep in mind, he says.

More jobs than applicants

TV 2 has in previous cases mentioned that the labor market is very hot during the day. According to Henrik Øhrn, head of HR Norway, the situation is far above normal, if you compare with 2018 and 2019.

Wiik says that this year there are more vacant summer jobs than applicants. More students want a free period, and this means that more people work shorter time intervals.

As a student, you have the same right to vacation as permanent employees. Which means that students can claim the connections holiday between June 1 and September 30. We experience that many want to end the holiday at the end of July / beginning of August. To breathe a little, and get a well-deserved break before starting your studies.
