In the early 1970s, family law was hardly kind to women. Adultery was legally sanctioned much more when it was the wife and not the husband who committed it, the notion of marital rape did not exist. And divorce by mutual consent did not exist: if the spouses agreed to separate, they should not show it and simulate cross accusations. It was not until 1975, under the presidency of Valéry Giscard d’Estaing, that a major divorce reform introduced the possibility of divorce by mutual consent.

The law has thus greatly progressed… but it will take half a century to improve in terms of the effective payment of maintenance, with a new system introduced in 2021, allowing the Family Allowance Funds to eventually replace the defaulting parent. .
