The Boss is the perfect villain for Captain America: New World Order

The cinematic future of the Sentinel of Liberty in the Marvel Cineamtic Universe is tied to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie)which after the surprising decision of Steve Rogers in Avengers: Endgame and the events of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has finally accepted the Shield of Cap. A role that will return to play in the announced Captain America: New World Order, film directed by Julius Onah. To make this chapter of the franchise particularly intriguing for the director was the choice of the villain as opposed to Sam Wilson, so much so that it was confirmed by Julius Onah himself that the Boss is the perfect villain for Captain America: New World Order.

For Julius Onah, the Boss is the ideal villain for Captain America: New World Order

The Boss is actually a historical enemy of the Hulk, considering that he was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko who introduced the character in 1964 in Tales to Astonish # 62. Samuel Sterns was yet another victim of the dangers of gamma rays, but instead of developing a super strength like Bruce Banner, Sterns has instead obtained a superior intelligence, which has allowed on several occasions to create situations that have contrasted a fine intellect to the brute force of Hulk.

Within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sterns, played by Tim Blake Nelson, appeared in The Incredible Hulk (2008), where he was portrayed as a scientist trying to help Bruce Banner (Edward Norton) find a cure that would allow him to eliminate the Hulk from his life. In the final scenes of the film, we had seen how Sterns, coming into contact with Banner’s blood, was undergoing a mutation that enlarged his skull, a clear omen of his future as his Chief. This detail sets a precedent for the danger of contact with Banner’s blood, which was further confirmed in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, where Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany) gains her powers in a similar way.

During the recent D23 Expo, Julius Onah shared to Phase Zero his enthusiasm in being able to use the Capo as a villain for Captain America: New World Order:

One aspect that immediately attracted me to this project is the fact that the Boss is an enemy who uses the intellect. And it’s really cool to be able to work with an enemy who uses his intelligence to put Sam Wilson in trouble. The film will be like a paranoid thriller, a concrete adventure where I believe that events will seem real and intended precisely because of who the enemy will be. All that Captain America will have to face will be due to the fact that he is facing an opponent who is so terribly intelligent.

Captain America: New World Order will be released in American theaters on May 3, 2024.
