King Felipe and Queen Letizia chose an interesting time to visit Sweden, to say the least.
The Spanish royal couple has been on a state visit for two days, and what timing they managed to achieve with their visit. In the middle of the visit, one of the most stormy days in Swedish politics ever took place, when Sweden got its very first female prime minister in Magdalena Andersson only to see her resign a few hours later after the government’s budget fell.
After that, there was a banquet at the castle, still with Stefan Löfven as head of government, not Magdalena Andersson.
The Spanish royal couple probably needed a quick course in Swedish domestic politics to keep up with the turns, because it was not easy!
The king’s words about the difficulties
The king gave a speech to welcome the guests to the banquet and then addressed the tough times that have applied to the country since the beginning of 2020, when the pandemic started.
Your Highness, our nations and economies are facing a time of recovery from the pandemic. Last summer we also saw extreme weather in many parts of Europe, including Spain and Sweden. These events highlight the need to move to more sustainable and resilient societies, the king said in his speech.
In addition to Stefan Löfven, there were several other dignitaries in Swedish politics at the banquet. The Speaker Andreas Norlén was present, and there were three Social Democrats: Minister of Foreign Affairs Ann Linde, Minister of Social Affairs Lena Hallengren and Minister of Education Anna Ekström.
Andreas Norlén commented on what impression the king had received during a press conference the following day.
– The Spanish delegation, the king and others showed great interest in Swedish politics, I emphasized that they chose a good day to visit Sweden if you are interested in constitutional and political issues, says Andreas Norlén at the press conference shown on SVT.
