Two characters stole their eyes and won the applause of all those attending the Friki Festival, held a few days ago, in the Mall del Sur in San Juan de Miraflores. They were two cosplay figures from Knights of the Zodiac: the Divine Swan and Aldebaran of Taurus (The golden knight of Taurus).
Beneath those suits were Jonathan (33) and Angelo (5) Lopez. Father and son showed off perfectly made armor with cardboard and other materials (such as thin leatherette, lights) that give them firmness, texture and luminosity. This art is known as papercraft.

Jonathan, how long did it take you to make the costumes?
About three weeks. First I made the armor of my little boy, a Divine Swan from The Knights of the Zodiac. He would take it to cosplay contests, but he was a bit intimidated by people. As I said that I had made the suit, they recommended me to make an armor for myself so that I could accompany Angelo and give him more confidence.
And you did it…
Sure, I made my armor from Aldebaran, the golden knight of Taurus.

How did you learn this technique with cardboard?
Watching tutorials on the internet. It all started when my son was born. Like all new parents, I wanted to celebrate his birth month and dress him as Goku, but I couldn’t find the character’s wig. Searching on the internet I saw that I could do it myself with paper. As I am very curious and I like crafts, I started doing it. The result was better than I expected, ha ha ha.
So, that’s how it all started.
Yes, I made other characters, like pokemons and digimons, and every day I perfected my technique. Until I decided to make life-size characters, like mine and my son’s costume. For six months I have been making them to order, not only here in Peru, I have also sent them to Mexico and Bolivia.
Have you won any cosplay contest?
Some. I remember one in Plaza Arenales and we won the thousand soles of the prize for first place. Angelo and I were happy to receive the applause from the people, they even asked us for photos.
I see that Angelo is happy with his suit…
He loves his armor because it draws attention and makes him more confident. It’s like she has a protective shield. On top of her costume there are lights that give the idea of seeing her ‘cosmos’, a type of energy that the character’s body emits.
Soon you will make the 12 knights…
There is a proposal to make them in real size and exhibit them in the Museum of the Knights of the Zodiac, which has been installed in various shopping centers.
Where can they see your work?
I am like ArtPro World on Facebook and Instagram. And on TikTok (artpro_papercraft) I do live broadcasts showing some designs on paper. So if you want to learn, you can follow me.
