The United States warned that it will “never recognize” Russian annexations of Ukrainian territory, whereby will not know the results of the referendums to annex pro-Russian areas of that country.

“These referendums are a an affront to the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity that underpin the international system,” said White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan.

“The United States will never recognize Russia’s claims to any allegedly annexed part of Ukraine”, he added.

At about the same time, the head of the NATO, Jens Stoltenbergalso denounced the plans of the Russian-backed forces and warned that they were another escalation in the war provoked by the Kremlin.

“Fake referendums have no legitimacy and do not change the nature of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. This is a new escalation in Putin’s war.”the secretary general of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization wrote on Twitter.

“The international community must condemn this flagrant violation of international law and increase support for Ukraine”he added.

The pro-Russian separatist territories of Donetsk Y Lugansk -both in the Donbas region, in eastern Ukraine- as well as the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions announced the call for annexation referendums from the 23rd to the 27th of this month.

Ukraine responded immediately, promising to “liquidate” the Russian “threat”.

“Ukraine is going to solve the Russian question. The threat can only be liquidated by force.”the head of the Ukrainian presidential administration Andrii Yermak wrote on Telegram.
