Just out of theaters after winning over audiences and critics, The Woman King finally made it to digital platforms. The long, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood is now available on Prime Video, Play Store and Microsoft Store for purchase and rent. According to Sony Pictures, the production reached more than one million viewers in Brazil in October, and the expectation is that this number will increase even more with the launch on digital platforms.
It is worth remembering that Viola Davis, who gives life to the protagonist Nanisca, was in Brazil in September to publicize the work. She spoke to the press and spoke of the importance of the film especially for women and people of color. The actress also spoke about her physical exercise routine to be able to bring to life a general of a tribe of African women in the 1800s.
What is The Woman King about?
Filmed in South Africa, the plot of The Woman King tells the story of the Kingdom of Dahomey — where Benin would be today — and an army of black women commanded by General Nanisca, who fights against rival tribes and colonizers.
With many action and drama scenes, the film talks about female strength in the fight against slavery of black people. It is worth remembering that to bring this story to life, in addition to Viola, other black actresses such as Thuso Mbedu, Lashana Lynch, Sheila Atim and Jayme Lawson were cast. Also completing the team are Jordan Bolger, John Boyega and Hero Fiennes.
The success of The Woman King
Since it debuted, The Woman King, as it is called in English, achieved good results with the audience. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film achieved 94% positive reviews from critics and 99% from the public, a positive and atypical result, little seen in other productions.
This is due to a cohesive, well-written and well-executed script. The Woman King it positively surprises even those who had high expectations.
