Sony and the latest Madden NFL title dominated last month, as the NPD Group officially revealed its game sales data for the month of August. The market research company has become one of the leading sources for tracking sales of both games and gaming hardware in the United States.
The NPD Group regularly publishes its monthly list of best-selling games, as well as the cumulative ranking of game sales throughout the year. Now, the latest report from NPD’s Mat Piscatella offers an inside look at game sales for the month of August.
An extensive report posted on Piscatella’s Twitter offers a wealth of data on game and hardware sales during the month of Augustwith PS5 to the head. Piscatella revealed that the PlayStation 5 topped US game sales for the month of August, despite Sony’s announcement of a PS5 price hike later in the month.
The report also confirmed that Switch it continued to lead the hardware sales of all consoles throughout the year. In particular, it is said that both xbox series x and PS5 have seen “double-digit percentage growth” in sales compared to last year’s figures.
Piscatella’s report went on to detail August sales for individual games, with EA Sports’ Madden NFL 23 leading the way, fresh off the annual football game. The newly released Saints Row reboot followed shortly after in second place, and Marvel’s Spider-Man made a big jump to third place in August.
Elden Ring and MultiVersus round out the Top 5 for August, both dropping from their second and first positions last month, respectively.
The Top 20 for August showed many other interesting details about the sales of old and new games. Aside from the aforementioned Madden NFL 23 and Saints Row, ATLUS’ Soul Hackers 2 was the only new game to break into the monthly Top 20, finishing in 15th place.
Several older games continue to hold strong positions in the monthly rankings, such as Mario Kart 8 and Minecraft, which finished just outside the Top 5. Nintendo was the most represented publisher in the August rankings, with five games in the top 20 for August.
